I found this article the other day which I thought was very truthful and well written. Imagine you go to work every day and do your absolute best. You work as hard as you can, do everything perfectly, or at least as close to it as humanly possible, and throughout the day, every 15 minutes, your boss comes over and tells you that you are an idiot. Each time he tells you that everything you do is wrong, even if you know it's not.

Then instead of paying you, he forces you to write a check to the company. I would like to balance some of these negatives with some positive arguments for poker as a career: Therefore you do not waste up to 2 hours a day commuting to work. You are essentially, eco friendly! Without the gamble factor and donks getting lucky, there would be no fish and therefore no soft games.

Gambling also means for UK residents, it's TAX FREE! The worst thing that could happen is poker could be declared a game of skill.

But there's a lot of stress in commuting to work as I mentioned earlier and dealing with assholes at work.

If something important pops up, you can quit playing poker for an hour or a day or a week. You can't do that easily in a full time job. But you can slack in a 'job' if you like and it not be noticed. I actually like this pressure to be 'perfect', it makes you do everything else in your life to a high standard. No in fact your brain is getting great exercise every day. I've found my mental focus has improved with the tough table workouts. I now hate games like roulette, blackjack etc.

I'll run better in the future. Before poker pro days, when I got down I would say 'I feel like shit. When's it gonna end?

So I am very in control of my emotions now. For example, someone crashed into my Lexus 4x4 the other day. A few years back I would have got out and started a fist fight.

Instead, I checked the damage and calmly got the other drivers insurance details and went on my way. I have always been a hustler, but poker has given me the pro-hustler mind set.

No matter what happens in the global economy, if you can play winning poker you can probably survive any storm. That is completely different for example if you work in mortgages, finance, new home building etc. Obviously poker can destroy your brain. But my brain seems to handle it OK right now. Ask me in a few months however Dude, I love your theory!!! I even have a degree from college and i'm gonna be using my poker money to pay that crap off. Anyways, I heard Obama likes poker and that bill will probably get passed when he wins.

All the US donks will be back in Action and not to mention i've noticed alot of china donks on my tables. I had a guy call a 3 bet pre with q 6 suited.

Thinking of that gets me hard. Cant wait till Poker gets bigger in Asia, South America they so bad! We'll all be super rich! Yeah if Obama makes it more accessible to Americans, I think the boomtime will be here. The solid players will be waiting I know I have another thread talking about how I want to take leave from uni for 6 mths but intrinsically I think I'll feel better as a productive member of society than playing poker which, at the end of the day, doesn't add anything of value to the society.

I think a lot of what you wrote down as positives apply when you have a job that engages you intellectually, as well as if you play poker as a hobby but seriously. Playing poker is no different from trading shares or futures so why should it be seen as non-productive?

I'd like to add some other positive points to poker as a career: If you want to become the next Brian Townsend or Krantz, it is possible. Compare that to most jobs where 'people' will prevent you from reaching the top. The side effect of this is when you play a MTT you're significantly better than the recreational player.

For me the possibility of being a millionaire is a distant but possible option as long as I enter MTT satellites and don't do anything stupid. For the average joe non-poker player, he has the lotto and that's it. Our lottery in UK is I'd much prefer the to 1 odds at the WSOP Main event. Playing shares or futures are largely also non-productive. The net change in total wealth among participants is zero; the wealth is just shifted from one to another.

Options and future contracts are examples of zero-sum games excluding costs. For every person who gains on a contract, there is a counter-party who loses. Gambling is also an example of a zero-sum game. A stock market, however, is not a zero-sum game because wealth can be created in a stock market.

I like what Steve said about coaching though.. I guess you're contributing to people's quality of life that way.

I think its all depends on what you do in the real world. I spent 12 years in the construction industry and hated every minute of it.

Now i sit home, make twice as much per hour, and spend so much more time with my 2 year old. I definitely understand where alot of you are coming from though Its not a bad idea to have a "real" job for a few years. Besides the social aspect, if you ever do decide to go pro you will appreciate the little things.
